What is the scope of sports medicine training? Click here to see where and how I trained:

Before training in sports medicine, I started the 501(3)c nonprofit Waves of Health during my residency:

Waves of Health’s mission is to provide modern medical care to underserved communities, to educate healthcare professionals about the medical problems of the developing world and to educate surfers how to take care of themselves and others. Waves of Health is a completely voluntary organization made up of local doctors, nurses, pharmacists and other professionals who volunteer their time and energy to help those less fortunate in underserved communities.

In a time when this specific area of the world is in great need, Waves of Health will be continuing their work aiding the people of the Dominican Republic and Haiti that they started over 3 years ago. Unlike other non-profits that have only begun work in this area since the earthquake, Waves of Health has been dedicated to the medical needs of those less fortunate in the area for years. We’d like to document this organization’s mission because they recognize that while populations are greatly affected by natural disasters, ongoing, continuous medical care has a greater impact in the long run than just reactionary aid.

Consistently treating those in need is crucial to the wellbeing and development of a country and has a longer lasting, sustainable effect. Waves of Health has a proven track record for preventative medicine: supplying impoverished areas with routine checkups, daily medical supplies and over the counter drugs to each family it treats. Waves of Health looks forward to not only directly contributing to the global relief effort this year, but continuing their general support for these nations in the years to come.

Waves of Health recently made our fourth medical mission to the underserved frontier town of Dajabon, Dominican Republic which borders Haiti. Dajabon is located on the Haitian border 80 miles northeast of Port-au-Prince. Many displaced and injured people have made their way to this Dominican Republic city from Haiti. In conjunction with local doctors, we provide medical care and supplies to residents from the most impoverished sections within the town and surrounding communities.

To raise awareness for Waves of Health within the surfing community, we held a medical conference and volunteered as:

Physicians who train in Sports Medicine often find themselves, like outreach physicians, on or in the field as the first point of care. Those physicians who choose to cover or participate in events such as surfing and outreach clinics find themselves requiring skills in Primary Care, Sports and Wilderness Medicine. The most rewarding aspects of my studies and career have manifested as a non-profit organization, “Waves of Health”, that strives to combine principles of Sports Medicine, Wilderness Medicine, surfing and primary care outreach medicine to benefit the often underserved and communities visited by surfers and other watermen. “Waves of Health” is not only committed to improving the lives of host peoples in the places we travel to surf, but also to surfers themselves.

Having been involved with the Surfers Medical Association, the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), the Wilderness Medical Society (WMS) for years now, I have come to know the players who have laid the groundwork of surfing medicine and its close ties to outreach clinics in areas such as Sumba and the Mentawai’s in Indonesia as well as the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Nicaragua, Fiji and anywhere there are underserved people and waves. Whether through faith or a deep need to validate the reward of surfing exotic waves, a good percentage of surfing health professionals engage in outreach work. Their work involves using the principles of primary care and sometimes wilderness medicine to treat and prevent disease without modern hospital diagnostics. Their play and psychic reward for that work, surfing, requires skills in both Sports and Wilderness Medicine to treat and prevent injury.

Sports and Wilderness Medicine share many commonalities with Waves of Health and each other. Like Waves of Health, WMS and ACSM have been designated as 501©3 public charities for the public good. Modules of education such Advanced Wilderness Life Support will improve the first-response capabilities for those who travel away from urban medical centers in search of uncrowded waves and peace. The roles of surfing as both a sport and driving factor for traveling health and environmental stewardship both locally and in far flung regions throughout the globe involve both sports and wilderness medicine. Sports Medicine, Wilderness Medicine, Outreach Medicine and surfing doctors will never be mutually exclusive from each other in my opinion as the cultures and lifestyles themselves overlap. Therefore the idea of surfing sports and outreach medicine must occupy all these spheres. It is the mission of Waves of Health to fulfill this requirement.
